Cairns artist Petra Meikle de Vlas works from a studio at Holloways Beach, fifteen minutes north of the city and fifteen nautical miles from the Reef. Her mixed-media paintings use poured paint, blowtorch, spray bottle, and gravity — tilting the board to mimic tides — to build textured, layered surfaces that read less like representations of ocean than physical records of it.
