Shoemaking
Wootten
Ballarat & Goldfields, VIC
The Story
Wootten is a bootmaking workshop in the Ballarat suburb of Delacombe, descended from Custom Fit Australia — one of the few Melbourne shoemakers that kept going after the 1980s tariff cuts hollowed out the local trade. Jess Cameron-Wootten, who took it over in 2012 and named it for his shoemaker father, lasts every pair by hand and stitches the soles himself. The bench is staffed by people who came from R.M. Williams, Rossi and the old Ballarat boot factories. Boots, shoes, bags and aprons, made to order or to your own last.
